In College Station ISD, each campus is charged with designating individuals on their campus to be members of the campus' "Coaching Crew". They can be teachers, counselors, and/or administration. A few times a year the Coaching Crews are pulled for district-wide training on different aspects of coaching. What does it look like? How should a coach respond in situations? Etc.
This past week, during our training, we read part of an article titled, "Courage to Love" written by Heather Wall and Michelle Palmer.
We exerted loads of energy discussing, in detail, humility and coaching and how they coincide. The authors wrote, "people don't listen during conversations, they reload." They argued how we need to start with humility and act as if the other person's point of view is valid. The authors challenged the readers to believe the other's idea might not only be right, but also the best option. "Dialogue cannot exist without humility. Humility implies respect for the other person's point of view and willingness to honestly listen without reloading...."
After I left Coaching Crew, the thought, "listen...don't reload" resonated with me. I tossed and turned throughout the night wondering how many times I had the intention of "coaching" teachers, students, or parents, but in reality, all I was doing was proving my "rightness".
I am on a learning journey. Please join me in learning how to lead others better by being fully present in the moment.
Listen...Don't reload.
